Wolfgang Redik
Wolfgang Redik was born in 1968 in Graz, Austria. He studied in his hometown and at the Vienna Music Academy, where he completed his studies. As a multiple award winner of international competitions and through many master classes, his international career began during his studies. Some of his most influential teachers and mentors include Isaac Stern, Norbert Brainin, Claudio Abbado, Adam Fischer, and Jaime Laredo.
After nearly 25 years dedicated to chamber music (1987-92 String Quartet, 1988-2012 Violinist of the Vienna Piano Trio), he now increasingly focuses on the solo repertoire and orchestral conducting. He has directed ensembles such as the Camerata Salzburg and the recreation-Great Orchestra Graz. Since 2010, he has been the artistic director of the Sándor Végh Chamber Orchestra.
Moreover, Wolfgang Redik was invited by Kent Nagano to lead concerts of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal starting from the 2012/13 season. His debut as conductor and soloist with this renowned orchestra took place in November 2012.
As a soloist, Wolfgang Redik has performed with orchestras such as the Orchestre Philharmonique Belgique, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonic, and the Munich Chamber Orchestra. Concerts in Tokyo, Shanghai, Milan, Toronto, Chicago, and Geneva are notable entries in his concert calendar, as are performances at the Gewandhaus Leipzig, the Great Musikverein Hall in Vienna, the Bregenz Festival House, and the Tonhalle Zurich.
Wolfgang Redik is First Concertmaster of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and regularly acts as guest concertmaster in various European orchestras.
His discography comprises over 80 CD recordings, ranging from orchestral to chamber music to solo performances. Many of his CDs have been awarded.
Following his teaching activity at the Graz Music Academy (1989-2007), he was appointed University Professor for Chamber Music at the University of Mozarteum Salzburg in the fall of 2007. Since 2019, he holds a professorship with the same responsibilities at the "Hanns Eisler" Music Academy in Berlin.
In the academic year 2009/10, he also served as a professor of violin at the Leipzig Music Academy.
In the fall of 2012, Wolfgang Redik accepted the call to be the artistic director of the Orchestral Center NRW in Dortmund.
Since the 2009/10 academic year, Wolfgang Redik annually conducts workshops and master classes for ensembles and small orchestras at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and at the Beijing Conservatory of Music.
He also guest-conducted the symphony orchestras of the music universities in Memphis, Toronto, and Sydney.
Wolfgang Redik plays a violin made by J. B. Guadagnini in 1772, which is provided to him by the Austrian National Bank.
